This condition may be observed during the second trimester and may get worse in the eighth month of pregnancy. 

If left untreated, this condition may lead to severe gingivitis or periodontitis, which can put the pregnant mom and her child at risk.

As mentioned earlier, many changes will happen to a pregnant woman’s body. Do not worry too much about swollen or bleeding gums as there are simple ways that you can do to deal with this condition: 

  • Practice good oral hygiene. Like you would normally do, brush your teeth twice a day with pregnancy-safe toothpaste that contains fluoride. Also, don’t forget to floss daily to get rid of tiny food particles and plaque that might be trapped between your teeth and gums. 
  • Gargle regularly. To help ease soreness of your gums, try to gargle a sea-salt solution after brushing. Just dilute one teaspoon of sea-salt to one cup of warm water. Using  pregnancy-safe mouthwash can also reduce bacteria and plaque in your mouth. 
  • Maintain a balanced diet. Eating right is not only good for you and your baby’s health. Food with Vitamin C and calcium will help keep your teeth and bones strong and gums healthy. To make sure you get the vitamins and minerals you need, choose among the best prenatal vitamins.
  • Avoid too many sweets. Cravings can be a little tough during pregnancy, but take only a moderate amount of sweet treats if you can as this can also have an effect on your teeth and gums. 
  • Visit your dentist. Try to get checked and have your teeth cleaned by your dentist even when pregnant. Also, if you suspect that a pregnancy gingivitis has gotten worse, inform your dentist and your doctor immediately.

Always remember that during pregnancy, you still need to take good care of yourself. If you practice good oral hygiene and continue to visit your dentist, your gums and teeth will likely go back to normal after your pregnancy.
