You don't have to be one of the fashionable crazy rich Asians to have a fabulous sense of style!

Since the trailer of Crazy Rich Asians premiered, it’s been expected to be the Fashion movie of the year, which will give Ocean’s 8 movie a run for its money.

The much awaited movie adaptation of Singaporean author Kevin Kwan’s bestseller revolves around the story of Rachel Chu, a New York University professor whose dreamy boyfriend, Nick, asks her to come away with him to Singapore for his best friend’s wedding. There, she is stunned to find out he is practically the “Prince William of Asia.” Suddenly, she is immersed the dazzling world of the obscenely rich—luxury cars, mansions, the works.

It all seems like a fairy tale until she meets Nick’s mum, Eleanor, who thinks that—-as Rachel’s BFF put it bluntly—she is “an unrefined banana, yellow on the outside, white on the inside.” Basically, her man’s disapproving mum thinks she’s an unsophisticated, middle-class Chinese-American girl who isn’t a good match for his eligible bachelor of a son.

Any story that revolves around the lifestyles of the rich (and richer) has to have a killer wardrobe, right? By the looks of it, Crazy Rich Asians will be serving up a delicious buffet of haute couture for fashion-loving moviegoers worldwide. It also helps that the author has a keen eye for style, having studied Fashion photography at Parson’s School of Design.

In an interview with Gist, Kwan revealed he worked closely with the film’s costume designer to bring the richness of the world he created to life.

“I think the fashion is going to be spectacular,” he tells Gist in an interview.

The film is set to premiere in August, but the enthusiasm all around the world began when the cast was announced last year, and it shows no sign of waning.

For now though, let’s gorge ourselves on the delicious looks the teasers have given us so far!

Style Lessons from the Fashionable Crazy Rich Asians

Rachel Chu (Constance Wu)

Much like the character she portrays, actress Constance Wu—who’s best known for her work on the comedy Fresh Off the Boat-–has a feminine personal style with a bit of sass.

In the trailer, we see her looking radiant in a soft, tulle Nairobi blue dress, with floral details. Her sleek updo, which is a departure from her usual beach waves, is accented by a pretty tiara.

In other clips, we see her in a charming blush summer dress, and a shimmery low-cut number. When it comes to her makeup, she is absolutely glowing! Her dewy, soft look (with just a swipe of blush-tinged or nude lipstick) complements her feminine #ootd flawlessly.

What does Rachel teach us about style?

We all need a little help in the fashion department sometimes. Every makeover story needs a fairy godmother, right? For Rachel, Oliver T’sien played by Nico Santos gives her the style boost she needs. But she’s always had it in her.

Nick Young (Henry Golding)

Rachel’s handsome beau isn’t about to let the ladies have all the fun in the fashion department. In the trailer, Nick Young looks dapper in an all-ivory suit that’s super sleek and cool, until the charmingly klutzy Rachel spills wine on it. Whoops!

If you’re going to wear white to a formal gathering, you have to be ready for anything!

Goh Peik Lin (Awkwafina)

Rachel’s BFF Goh Peik Lin, played by the hilarious Awkwafina, marches to the beat of her own drum, and she dresses the same way! In the trailer, she wears wacky printed pyjamas and throws around on-point wisecracks. As if her cropped, blonde hair wasn’t enough of a statement!

Don’t be afraid to wear bold, silly prints. Personal style should be an expression of your authentic self. Goh Peik Lin is obviously a fan of eyeliner and metallic eye shadow and like her bestie Rachel, soft nude lips.

Araminta Lee (Sonoya Mizuno)

We first catch a glimpse of the gorgeous model Araminta in the trailer, wearing a bespoke Valentino wedding dress, as she walks down the aisle to marry Colin, Nick’s best friend.

Stills from the film also show her wearing a striking gold sequin jumpsuit, her luscious locks swept up in a high ponytail. Can you expect anything less from a fashion legend who’s worked with Alexander McQueen?

If you have it, flaunt it (and have fun with it!) As for makeup tricks we picked up from the stunning model, it’s all about choosing makeup that complements your natural skin tone.

Eleanor Young (Michelle Yeoh)

The Singapore socialite, played by veteran Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh, seems to always be making things hard on Rachel. But at least, she does so in style! Wearing ornate fabrics, and Asian haute couture, it’s impossible not to marvel at this snobby, stylish matriarch. Really, her eyebrows seem to be as permanently raised as her glamorous ‘do.

What does Eleanor teach us about style?

Genuine taste defies decades. If you have classic, timeless pieces, hold on to them. For makeup, clean, classic looks do the trick—a dab of blush, a bit of highlighter, and eyeliner. Remember: true, lasting style knows no age. Also, try to smile every now and then. It does wonders for your look.

Astrid Leong-Teo (Gemma Chan)

Nicknamed the “Goddess,” this stylish stunner teaches us many fashion tricks. For Astrid, a hefty price tag doesn’t automatically make something fashionable. She keeps it simple—even repeating outfits—because she’s totally confident in her own taste. For makeup, Astrid loves mascara, which makes her gorgeous eyes pop.

This fashion girl reminds us that we don’t have to prove anything to anyone. What makes a true style star in Astrid’s book? Never bragging about what’s in your wardrobe!

Kitty Pong (Fiona Xie)

The Hong Kong soap actress is dismissed as a social climber. She’s fond of revealing outfits, making an entrance, and being true to herself. Will she graduate from tabloid darling to high fashion editorial IT girl? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Don’t listen to the haters. Wear what makes you feel good. When it comes to makeup, “lashes for days” is Kitty’s motto. Swipe on some deep, rouge lipstick and you’re good to go!
