Here's How To Identify Your Skin Tone

Learn how to identify your skin tone and slay the beauty game.

If there  was a beauty 101 course in collegewhich there should be, you’d likely get lectured on the importance of knowing your skin tone within the first week. Why? Because knowing how to identify your skin tone is key to solving other puzzling questions like which makeup you can slay in and which ones you should avoid.

There are three classifications: warm, cool and neutral.

If you have warm skin undertones chances are your skin looks yellow, golden, peachy or orange. Alternatively, if you have cool skin undertones your skin will look purple, pink, blue or red. If you have neutral undertones, you get the best of both worlds and your skin can reflect either of the two sets of colours.

Of course, since these are undertones, chances are they will be difficult to detect. You can’t always look at yourself to check if you have a medium skin tone with yellow undertones or deeper skin tone with golden or yellow undertones. So how do you solve this puzzle?

Fortunately, there are some clues that are hidden within your skin that can show  you your skin’s undertone and help you make the right colour choices.

How To Identify Your Skin Tone?

The first step to identify your skin tone is to answer a couple of questions. Yes, easy-peezy!

Here’s what you need to know.

1. What colour are your veins?

Check your wrists, inside of your elbow  or your feet to observe the colour of your veins. If you see green or blue coloured veins, you have a warm undertone.

On the other hand, if you spot blue or purple colour, you are cool toned. If you happen to spot veins where the colour overlaps between green and blue or you cannot tell the colour at all, you have a neutral skin tone.

2. What is the colour of your skin when you place a blank white paper next to it?

This next question can also help you determine your undertone. All you need is a white blank sheet.

Keep your bare face or the inner portion of your wrist next to the white sheet. If your skin appears slightly yellow or golden next to a white paper, it is warm toned. However, if it appears pale or pink, you are cool-toned. If none of the colours stand out, you are neutral-toned.

3. What colours do you like to wear?

We tend to naturally gravitate towards certain colours more than others (ignore our best friend ‘black’). If you love wearing pinks and pastels and naturally gravitate towards jewel tones like blue, purple, and even emerald-greens you are cool toned.

Alternatively, if you like donning more earthy tones like rust, brown, hazel, red, yellow, orange and even olive green, you are warm toned.

If you love wearing all types of colours and hues, my dear lucky friend you have a neutral skin undertone.

4. Which coloured jewellery do you love to wear?

Up next, time to don some jewels. Literally! Pick up your favourite pieces of jewellery. Are they mostly silver? Well then you are cool-toned. However, if you love the yellow metal or gravitate more towards rose gold, you are warm toned.

And, if you happen to have a healthy mix of both and are confident that both look fantastic on you (we don’t doubt that), you are neutral toned.

5. What are your natural eye and hair colours?

Finally, if you have brown, green, blue or grey eyes with blonde, brown or black hair that has platinum tones, you have cool skin undertones.

On the other hand, if you have brown, hazel or green eyes with auburn, strawberry blonde or black hair that has gold tones, you are likely to be warm toned.

Now if you are still trying to figure out how to identify your skin tone, then notice how your skin behaves when you are running errands under the sun.

Do you tan or burn?

If your skin tends to burn under the sun, you are cool toned. On the hand other, if you just tan, you are warm toned with a good infusion of melanin in your skin.

Now that you know how to identify your skin tone, let’s take you through some of the makeup looks you can flaunt if you have any of the three skin undertones.

Beauty Breakdown: Makeup Looks For Your Skin Tone

1. Makeup looks for the 'cool' chicas

Blues and pinks will look gorgeous on your fair and light skin. That means you can easily flaunt blue-based eyeshadows. This, in addition to pink and plum blushes and you can accentuate your lips with hues of red and plum.

2. Makeup looks for the 'warm' girls

You’re lucky because you don’t have to fake tan and you have a naturally gorgeous brown tint to your skin. So all the warm colours including brown, copper, yellow, and gold will look amazing on your skin.

Not to forget, you can pull off any peach and coral shade blush as well rock brown, coral and nude lipsticks.

3. Makeup looks for the lucky 'neutral' gals

Since your skin doesn’t really fall into one category, you are neither too pink nor too golden. So you are lucky enough to pull of the widest range of colours. You can splash on pink blushes as well as plums with equal ease.

The only thing you cannot experiment with is your foundation. It should always match your skin’s undertone.

So after knowing how to identify your skin tone check how the foundation looks against your skin. If your foundation looks too pink against your skin, you have warm undertones. If it looks too yellow, then you have pink undertones. If you don’t see either of the colours peek through your foundation, you are neutral.

Either way, we hope that this ultimate guide to understanding your skin tone will help you determine yours.
