Meghan Markle’s Royal Wedding Makeup Is Changing The Beauty Industry

Meghan Markle's royal wedding makeup is proof that being comfortable in your own skin is the key, whether or not you choose to wear makeup.

After months of speculation about Meghan Markle’s royal wedding makeup, the final reveal was both surprising and on point.

She kept her look naturalrefreshingly simple and put on display what was touted in the media as the 'chill-bride makeup,'

Markle made no effort to cover her freckles that peeked through her sheer Dior Beauty's Backstage Face and Body Foundation. In fact, in her interview to Vanity Fair last year, the Duchess explained how much she hated that photographers “at almost every photo shoot (they) would airbrush her freckles."

“I’ve always loved my freckles,” she added at the time.

No wonder then she made sure that on her wedding day, she let her natural beauty shine, albeit with the addition of a subtle smokey eye and a fresh messy bun. 

Celebrity hairstylist Serge Normant who was tasked with the job of keeping the Duchess' gorgeous mane in place stuck to her signature style. It was a bit more appropriate for the occasion. The look was so simple and elegant that Markle could have just as easily carried it off to an office meeting.

Post the big reveal, the Internet was flooded with opinions both for and against her makeup. Famous fashion and beauty gurus and influencers came out in support of her look. Even though they themselves promote the heavily-painted look. 

YouTuber Teni Penosan for instance, tweeted out that she found Markle's makeup to be "Elegant, understated, and beautiful." 

While some others weren't as impressed. One Twitter user tweeted her disapproval of the Duchess' makeup crudely. 

Even so, it's safe to say that most people were on Markle's side--praising her sartorial choice. But it wasn't just a fashion statement that the Duchess made.

Meghan Markle's royal wedding makeup wouldn't just go down in history as one for the chill-bride. It was potentially the change the beauty industry had long been waiting for--a radical Markle effect.

Marked by natural-looking makeup that enhances a woman's outfit, this effect is set to change the beauty industry. Which as it turns out is now focussing more on enhancing the skin than what's painted on it.

In fact, as Markle's wedding makeup artist Daniel Martin puts it, "Makeup should be the finishing touch to the dress, never the other way around."

Radical Markle Effect: Change For The Better 

In his interview with Elle, the celebrity makeup artist and Dior Brand Ambassador and Honest Beauty Creative Colour Consultant shared that heavy makeup could potentially ruin a look. And that's why most celebrities prefer to wear products that enhance their natural beauty, just as Meghan did. 

"If Meghan had much more makeup on, her face would have been the focus and not the gracefulness of her dress. It would have been distracting, and that’s what you don't want when the dress is the main attraction," he explained. 

This ideology in itself has brought about that 'radical' effect.

In the world of the contour queens Kardashians who swear by the full-coverage glam, Markle's barely-there makeup has set a new precedent, especially among Millennials.

Let's not forget that at the moment, the makeup world is dominated by the likes of Kardashians who brought contouring, bronzing, and highlighting to every household. Which by the way were former makeup artist tricks, but now all of us are in the know. 

All of this knowledge then combined with the inflow of innumerable palettes, base makeup products, contour kits, eyelash extensions and what not. And thanks to this, the makeup industry became more consumer-friendly and not so intimidating anymore. 

Then came Instagram makeup, which is a completely different ballgame. The OTT base coverage, the highlighter and makeup brand collaborations with YouTubers changed the beauty industry. The hashtags #beautyguru #influencer became commonplace. 

Natural-Look Loving Beauty Brands Riding High On Markle Effect 

But with Markle's look, companies that had been working on skincare and on sheer makeup are back in action. Take for instance, Glossier. It's tagline is: "A beauty brand inspired by real life.”

The three-year-old company promotes the 'dewy' and 'glowy' look and their products are 'not full-coverage.' In other words, their lipsticks are sheer, concealers don't hide your dark circles and they are insanely popular on Instagram.  

As is the craze for Korean Beauty. If social media influencers weren't reason enough, major skincare companies are investing millions of dollars in marketing their products.

From retinol to alpha hydroxy, lactic, citric, and glycolic acids, sheet masks and night creams- everything is centred around flawless, even-toned, and dewy skin. The influx of investment in skincare has been so high that NPD group reported that skincare sales in 2017 totalled $5.6 billion. Almost a nine percent increase from 2016.

But let's be honest, if you do have acne-prone skin, dark circles, pigmentation and an uneven skintone, a no-makeup makeup is perhaps not the best option.

While it helps to be naturally radiant, a full-coverage glam can take you all the way. You also need precise blending, contouring and using the right products that match your skin tone and complexion.

A lot goes into getting the no-makeup makeup look.

And as the Markle effect takes centrestage, one thing is clear--bridal makeup will no longer be the same. Dewy finish, long lashes, subtle lip and slightly rosy cheeks will replace full-coverage for many.

But the most important takeaway is that Markle was comfortable in whatever she wore and has inspired many to follow suit.
