Bizarre? Yes. But she totally owned that costume (and made us peckish for banh mi in the process).

Miss Vietnam H'Hien Nie made it to the Top 5, making her the first representative from Vietnam to do so.

2. When Miss Sweden blanked out and instantly went viral

3. When the pageant had its first-ever all-female panel of judges

Ladies were totally in power at the Miss Universe 2018, with an all-female panel of judges for the first time ever. Comprising the prestigious panel were:
  • Janaye Ingram, American political activist and beauty queen (Miss New Jersey USA 2004)
  • Monique Lhuillier, a Filipino-American fashion designer known for dressing brides and Hollywood stars on the red carpet
  • Michelle McLean, Namibian actress, writer, model, and beauty queen (Miss Universe 1992)
  • Iman Oubou, Moroccan-American entrepreneur and beauty queen (Miss New York US 2015 and 2nd Runner Up at Miss United States)
  • Bui Simon, Thai philanthropist and beauty queen (Miss Universe 1988)
  • Richelle Singson-Michael, Filipino architect and businesswoman who also organised the Miss Universe pageant in Manila in 2016
  • Lili Gil Valetta, Colombian-American entrepreneur

4. When Miss USA Sarah Rose Summers put her foot in her mouth

Miss USA, Miss Colombia, and Miss Australia found themselves in hot water after filming themselves talking about their non-English-speaking fellow contestants, particularly Miss Vietnam and Miss Cambodia. Miss USA Sarah Rose Summers has since publicly apologised for the gaffe on her Instagram. Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray weighed in on the controversy in an interview with TV5: "When I've seen the girls interact with each other, I've seen no trace of discrimination, of anything negative. In fact, when I see the girls interact, they've become like a whole group of friends. And even though those things that arise online, I mean, in real life, it's not that way at all. "I want to tell people, you know, don't base your judgement over one thing. You see a small moment but that doesn't need to define someone's relationship or someone's friendship. It can be taken out of context, perhaps it was said in a certain way, but you should never define the whole standing or their relationship or the whole situation in that one glimpse."
